Tips for breastfeeding in public

For many moms, openly breastfeeding in public can take a little getting used to, while others are comfortable with it from day one.

Here are some tips to help make breastfeeding a stress-free experience for both you and your baby.

Dress to breastfeed

Clothing is key when trying to make breastfeeding in public less stressful. Pick a nursing wear with easy access, or a bra that is easy to unfasten and refasten.

Button down shirts

Anything with zippers or buttons make a great friend for you while nursing. You can even save some money by wearing something you already own, without the need for purchasing special nursing gears. Wearing layers like a tank top or sweaters will also help with more coverage.

Opt for breastfeeding covers

Some moms prefer to be very discreet about nursing their babies, and covering up can provide them with more comfort. You can find a lot of nursing covers online that comes in many colours and patterns (you could even mix and match them with your daily outfit!)

Practice makes perfect

Try out different nursing bras, tank tops, shirts, nursing covers to find what is most comfortable for you. It is also a good idea to try them out in front of a mirror to see if you are exposing any skin without realising.

Find safety, and power, in numbers

Some moms find it more comforting when they breastfeed in public with a friendly face around, be it a sister, a friend, or a fellow mom. Practice breastfeeding in public together, or bring a supportive pal who can encourage you, or shield you, as you get comfortable.

Find privacy

There is absolutely nothing wrong with breastfeeding in a restaurant full of people, your baby needs to be fed too! But if it makes you feel more comfortable, you can position yourself to face away from the crowd. In some malls, you can find designated nursing rooms for you to breastfeed.

Prepare for naysayers

This is a given, because, in a world full of many different individuals, you are bound to find hasslers who will yell out their opinions about public breastfeeding. Prepare yourself for unsolicited commentary about where and how you choose to feed your baby.

The best way to deal with these people (ones who are against public breastfeeding) is all about being prepared. Have a straightforward answer ready so you are not caught off guard when it happens. Explain calmly that you need to feed your baby, and that you have a different viewpoint about public breastfeeding. If you feel threatened, you can always contact security or contact the management of the venue; they will most likely try to help you out to prevent bad press, and help you maintain a good experience in their establishment as a customer.
